Ghanaian Actress Jailed For Posting Nude Photo
A court in Ghana has on Friday sentenced Ghanaian actress Rosemond Brown, popularly known as Akuapem Poloo, to three months in prison for posting a naked photo of herself on social media beside her son.
Akuapem Poloo in a photo posted last July to celebrate her son’s seventh birthday, is seen crouching, facing the boy while holding his hands with her breasts hidden by her long hair while the boy is wearing underpants.
The image went viral and there was a huge backlash online.
The actress, who often posts photos of herself with her son on social media, apologized, but was invited for questioning by the police. Then Child Rights International, a non-governmental organization, pushed for her prosecution.
On Wednesday, she was found guilty of publishing obscene materials, engaging in domestic violence and undermining the privacy and integrity of another person – and was taken into custody.
Breaking down in tears as the judge read out the sentence in the court in the capital, Accra.
The announcement of her sentenced was postponed until Friday as the court was waiting for the result of a pregnancy test, which came back negative.
According to BBC reports, both Akuapem Poloo’s lawyers and the prosecutor had asked for a non-custodial sentence.
But presiding judge Christiana Cann said the jail sentence would serve as a deterrent to the general public given increasing levels of moral decadence in the country.
Some agree with the judge’s remarks, though social media users have been calling for the actress’s release since she was taken into custody using the hashtag #FreeAkuapemPoloo.
Celebrities like Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie said it was harsh to separate a child from his mother.
Kenya Lamu Mosque: Anger Over T-shirt Worn By Jay-Z
A US-based designer has apologized for using a portrait of a historic mosque in Kenya’s island of Lamu on a T-shirt worn by celebrity Jay-Z.
According to BBC quoting a mosque official said “we have accepted the apology letter because it was done in good faith,” after the designer Zeddie Loky reportedly produced the T-shirt to promote Lamu.
Earlier, Riyadha Mosque’s leaders had objected to the T-shirt as it could be worn to “sacrilegious joints” like bars.
Abubakar Badawy, the secretary general of Riyadha Mosque and Islamic Centre said worshippers became angry when they saw WhatsApp group photos of US-based music mogul Jay-Z wearing a T-shirt with a print of the mosque.
Lamu is a Unesco-listed World Heritage site and the 19th-Century mosque is a top tourist attraction.
It has manuscripts dating back to 1837, and is one of the oldest continuously functioning Islamic teaching institutions in East Africa.
Jay-Z was spotted in the T-shirt as he left a restaurant in Santa Monica, California, on 30 March, CNN reported.
Badawy said “many people were angry about this and thought that the officials running the mosque were involved.”
It prompted him to write a public letter to Mr Loky, the chief executive officer of clothing design company Blkburd Genes.
Badawy said he had since received a letter from Mr Loky, promising to remove “all inappropriate portrayals”.
The letter said the T-shirt had been part of a collection to celebrate Lamu, adding that “our intention was in good faith and in line with our mission of educating the world in world history using HD art, bold fine print and a QR code that carries our finding history on Lamu.”
