Insecurity: Reps Seek Suspension Of 2021 National Census

The House of Representatives is asking the federal government to immediately suspend the proposed 2021 population and housing census because of insecurity. The census was to be conducted by the National Population Commission (NPC).

An APC senator representing Niger State, Shehu Beji said in a motion on the floor of the house on Wednesday, the current insecurity had displaced numerous citizens and dwellers of various communities, that should also be captured in the exercise. He said with the overwhelming security challenges, achieving accuracy in any census may be unlikely.

The lawmaker also said some displaced persons had crossed to neighbouring countries for refuge and would not be captured if the census were conducted.

Gov El-Rufai Sacks 99 Political Appointees

Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El Rufai has sacked over 90 of his political appointees.

The governor revealed on Thursday nights that the state government had yet to disengage any civil servant as only agencies connected to the local government system have disengaged staff.

El Rufai in his statement to reporters listed those affected to include the 23 local government councils, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), and the Primary Health Care Board.

He said ‘’So far, 99 political appointees have lost their jobs but we have not commenced rightsizing civil servants,” adding that “we want to be fair with regards to civil servants. We had earlier promised that before we reduce the size of the civil service, we will start with political appointees and we have done that.”

El Rufai explained that the disengaged political appointees constituted 30 per cent of the total number of political office holders in the state.
