Nigeria Exporting Electricity Meters Despite Five Million Deficit

Published

on

With millions of Nigerians waiting for electricity meters to be assigned to them so arbitrary estimated billing would stop, it has been revealed that the country actually exports electricity meters to other African countries.

A national daily, The Guardian, says its reporters had visited some plants and warehouses, where they found hundreds of thousands of meters were stored without distribution to customers. Meanwhile, millions of Nigerians are stuck with arbitrary estimated monthly billing.

The newspaper says discos were to have been distributing more than one and a half million meters per year, about four hundred thousand per quarter, but only few more than one hundred fifty-seven thousand units were distributed during the third quarter of 2018.

One energy expert told The Guardian the slow pace of the metering program could be connected with the financial gains made by the electricity sector from estimated billling.  He also accused discos of complicity in the lapses in meter distribution.

Media special adviser to the minister, Aaron Artismas, acknowledged the program is slow, but he says there is need for imported meters because local companies are unable to meet the demand.  He assured that the National Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, will do its due diligence to plug existing loopholes in the scheme.
