Members of staff of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) in Lagos State have downed tools. The staff say they will be on strike till the government heeds to their calls.
One of the workers says the staff of the agency took the decision to go on strike to demand better welfare packages from the government.
He says the recent increase in the number of visitors at the office for registration of National Identification Number (NIN) has caused a lot of stress for the workers.
The workers are requesting to be paid more for conducting the exercise which he described as an extra duty.
The workers are also demanding that the government provides enough protective kits at the office, saying they could get infected with covid-19 as they attend to hundreds of residents daily.
In another development, NIMC says National Identification Number holders are required to pay n15,000 to correct their dates of birth in the commission’s database.
NIMC regional coordinator, Funmi Opesanwo says NIN holders are also required to pay a processing fee of n5,000 for card renewal or card replacement as well as an address modification fee of n500.
Opesanwo says the enrolment is free but there are fees attached to card renewal, correction of date of birth, and change of address.
The federal government said telcos subscribers with Nin have January 19 as deadline to link their Nin with their sim cards while subscribers without NIN have until February 9 to do so.
