N-Power: 5 Million Candidates Applied For Batch C Enrollment -- Sadiya Farouq

At least five million candidates have registered for the n-power program, which started in late June and was to end in late July but was extended by two weeks.

Minister of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, Sadiya Umar Farouq says the ministry will apply due diligence to ensure that only duly qualified applicants are enrolled during the next stages of the selection process.  She also said the ministry will fully inform the applicants and the general public on the progress of the scheme.

The minister said the n-power program is designed to provide the Nigerian youth with opportunities to gain work skills and become entrepreneurs.  She said this program will help in realizing president Muhammadu Buhari’s 10-year vision of lifting one hundred million Nigerians out of poverty.

NLC Issues Two-Week Ultimatum Over Petrol Price, Electricity Tariffs Rise

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has now issued a two-week ultimatum to the federal government to reverse the recent hikes in electricity tariff and petrol pump price.

The union says there will be grave consequences if the federal government fails to reverse the increases.

In a communiqué read by NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, the body says the ultimatum takes immediate effect and that at its expiration, NLC would mobilize its members for nationwide civil unrest.

Two weeks ago, the federal government increased the ex-depot price of petrol by n9, prompting marketers to increase their pump prices.

El-Rufai Signs Law Prescribing Castration For Rapists In Kaduna

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has signed into law, the Kaduna State Penal Code (amendment) law 2020 that updates the penalties for the offence of the rape of a child.  Now, punishment for the offense is surgical castration for male and bilateral salpingectomy for female convicts of child rape, and death.

In addition, such convicts will be listed in the sex offenders register to be published by the attorney-general of the state.

The law also introduces stricter punishments than the previous law which carried a maximum penalty of 21 years imprisonment for the rape of an adult and life imprisonment for the rape of a child.

Six Dead, Seven Injured In Ondo Accident

Six persons have been confirmed dead, seven others injured in a road accident along Akure-Ijesha road in Ondo State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, says the accident occurred on Wednesday evening, involving three vehicles at Ilara-Mokin in Ifedore local government area of the state.

Command’s spokesperson, Omotola Ogunbanwo attributed the causes of the accident to loss of control and wrong overtaking on the part of the drivers.

Ogunbanwo says the victims were taken to the general hospital in Igbara-Oke, while corpses were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
