COVID-19 Cases Drop In Nigeria

Nigeria is now gradually experiencing a decline in the daily number of recorded cases of Coronavirus infections.

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control confirmed three hundred and four new cases in fifteen states including Lagos and the federal capital territory. NCDC confirmed this is the lowest number in two weeks.

Sunday’s figure is slightly lower than cases recorded Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

This latest figure now brings to forty-three thousand, eight hundred, forty-one, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the country.

NCDC further confirmed eight hundred eighty-eight infected persons have so far died from the virus and more than twenty thousand patients have been discharged.

Nigeria has tested about 280,000 of its 200 million population.

Meanwhile, parents of private school students in Ogun State are protesting against a N25,000 fee, returning boarding students have been asked to pay for a Coronavirus test.

NLC Issues Two-Week Ultimatum Over Petrol Price, Electricity Tariffs Rise

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has now issued a two-week ultimatum to the federal government to reverse the recent hikes in electricity tariff and petrol pump price.

The union says there will be grave consequences if the federal government fails to reverse the increases.

In a communiqué read by NLC president, Ayuba Wabba, the body says the ultimatum takes immediate effect and that at its expiration, NLC would mobilize its members for nationwide civil unrest.

Two weeks ago, the federal government increased the ex-depot price of petrol by n9, prompting marketers to increase their pump prices.

El-Rufai Signs Law Prescribing Castration For Rapists In Kaduna

Governor Nasir El-Rufai has signed into law, the Kaduna State Penal Code (amendment) law 2020 that updates the penalties for the offence of the rape of a child.  Now, punishment for the offense is surgical castration for male and bilateral salpingectomy for female convicts of child rape, and death.

In addition, such convicts will be listed in the sex offenders register to be published by the attorney-general of the state.

The law also introduces stricter punishments than the previous law which carried a maximum penalty of 21 years imprisonment for the rape of an adult and life imprisonment for the rape of a child.

Six Dead, Seven Injured In Ondo Accident

Six persons have been confirmed dead, seven others injured in a road accident along Akure-Ijesha road in Ondo State.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, says the accident occurred on Wednesday evening, involving three vehicles at Ilara-Mokin in Ifedore local government area of the state.

Command’s spokesperson, Omotola Ogunbanwo attributed the causes of the accident to loss of control and wrong overtaking on the part of the drivers.

Ogunbanwo says the victims were taken to the general hospital in Igbara-Oke, while corpses were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
