Court Restrains INEC From Deregistering 31 Political Parties

Justice Anwuli Chikere of the federal high court, Abuja has stopped the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from deregistering 31 political parties.

In its ruling on Monday, the court ordered INEC to stay action on the matter with immediate effect.

INEC had de-registered 74 political parties early this month, leaving only 18.

Chairman of the commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, earlier said the action was carried out after a review of the performance of political parties after the 2019 general elections to see which parties qualify to exist.

Nigeria Records Two More Deaths From Coronavirus, Total Cases Hit 210

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has Friday confirmed 20 new cases of #coronavirus with another two deaths.

NCDC in a tweet said “twenty new cases of #COVID19 have been reported in Nigeria; 11 in Lagos, 3 in the FCT, 3 in Edo, 2 in Osun & 1 in Ondo.” The health agency added that “two new deaths have been recorded in Lagos and Edo State. As at 10:30 pm 3rd April there are 210 confirmed cases of #COVID19 reported in Nigeria.”

As at the time of report, a total of 25 patients have been released with four deaths recorded so far.

NCDC further urged people to stay at home as it warned that COVID19 is transmitted easily from person to person when people gather or visit public places.

Covid-19 Lockdown: Tension As Soldier Kills 28-Year-Old Man In Delta

Delta State government has reacted to Thursday’s killing of a twenty-eight-year-old man, Joseph Pessu, in Warri, allegedly by an unknown soldier, who was said to be enforcing the coronavirus lockdown in the state.  The deceased was shot dead in the early hours of Thursday by the yet-to-be identified soldier.

The government said in a series of tweets on Thursday on its official Twitter handle, it has called for immediate investigation of the incident.

The tweets announced the commencement of the investigation and expressed the government’s worry about the reported killing.  The tweets also said the government has sent a delegation to condole with the family of the deceased.  It also said military authorities have been contacted to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation into the killing.

Deputy senate president, Ovie Omo-Agege has also condemned the act which he described as extra-judicial killing.

Covid-19 Cases On the Rise In Nigeria, Jigawa Converts NYSC Camp, Hotel Into Isolation Centre

Covid-19 numbers in Nigeria have been increasing these days with blinding speed.  Just last night, 10 new cases were reported in Lagos and Abuja.  By this morning, the number had jumped by six more cases confirmed in Osun State by the Nigerian Center for Disease Control.

For now, the total number of cases stands at 190.

NCDC says 20 of the cases have been discharged.  Two have died.

Meanwhile, Jigawa State is preparing for the possibility of coronavirus cases hitting the state.  As of now, no cases have been reported there.  But the government is converting the national youth service corps orientation camp and a three-star hotel in Dutse into isolation centers for the pandemic.

Governor Muhammadu Badaru said the state could least afford to be complacent.  So, it has taken the measures to prepare to manage any outbreak of the epidemic in the state.
