Police shut down the Gani Fawehinmi park in Lagos, early on Tuesday, to abort a scheduled protest in support of the establishment of “operation Amotekun,” the southwest regional security outfit. The security operation has remained a controversial subject in the country since it was inaugurated two weeks ago.
Lagos state coordinator of Yoruba world congress and Amotekun, comrade George Akinola, says inspite of all antagonism against the outfit, “operation Amotekun will stand.”
Meanwhile, the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has called for dialogue over Amotekun between the south-west governors and the attorney-general and minister of justice, Abubakar Malami.
In his first public comments on the controversy, Tinubu said, “those claiming that this limited, inoffensive addition to security threatens the republic have taken themselves upon a madcap excursion,” end quote.
Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, has also expressed support for the establishment of the security outfit. He describes it as one that will complement the overstretched Nigerian police and army.
Atiku says self defense is international human rights, guaranteed by article 51 of the UN charter.
The former vice president says Nigeria has crossed the rubicon and cannot go back. He says there is too much insecurity in the land and too much inefficiency from the federal government, that have led to wanton and unnecessary loss of lives.
Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has advised that south-west governors should enact laws on Amotekun, because the federal government has no power to outlaw it.
Senate Confirms Mahmood Yakubu As INEC Chairman

Gaya says Yakubu is a nominee with a high level of intelligence, no affiliation to any political party and has never participated in any political campaign.
