Nigerian Court Orders Seizure Of Emirates 777

Emirates Airlines is facing the seizure of its Boeing 777 Aircraft in Nigeria if it does not satisfy a Lagos Federal High Court judgment of eight million naira against it.

One Dr. Charles Mekwunye had sought the order of court to enforce a supreme court judgment against the airline in a suit between Promise Mekwunye and Emirates Airlines.

Promise Mekwunye, who was a student in the U.S., brought the lawsuit against the airlines in 2008 for refusing to honor her round-trip airline ticket from Texas to Nigeria.   She said the airline refused to refund her payment for the ticket and gave no explanation for failing to do so.

A federal high court had ruled against the airline for breach of contract in 2010 and awarded damages and legal costs of a quarter million naira.  Emirates appealed and won.  The plaintiff took the case to the supreme court where it was overturned in February this year.

The judgment debt, plus interest, has now accumulated to about eight million naira, and emirates has not complied with the judgment.  It now faces seizure of one of its aircraft should it fly into Nigeria.

Victim Of Lagos Pipeline Explosion Receiving Treatment - LASEMA

Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, says burn victims of the Lagos pipeline explosion are currently receiving treatment at the Igando General Hospital.

The impact of the explosion destroyed the community bridge, which served as both a vehicular and pedestrian link for the community. Another victim was burned to death.

Witnesses say the pipeline leakage occurred at the Isheri area. The spill then flowed towards Idowu Egba and Alimosho areas of the city before exploding.

A pipeline had exploded in the same area in July. Two persons were killed in that inferno.

Drama As DSS Operatives Move To Rearrest Sowore, Bakare

DSS lay siege outside the court 7 of the federal high court Abuja on Friday to rearrest Omoyele Sowore.

At the resumed sitting,  the prosecutor, Hassan Liman informed the trial judge, Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu that the order granted by the court was obeyed and the defendants released.

Counsel to the defendant, Femi Falana acknowledged that Sowore was released to him yesterday.

The court therefore adjourned to 11,12, and 13th of February 2020, in the instance of the prosecutor, to enable him serve his witnesses statement to the defendant counsel.

Trouble started when Sowore and his counsel tried to leave the court room after the sitting

He was accosted by operatives of the DSS, who tried to forcefully take him out of the court room. The secret police had made fruitless attempts to rearrest Sowore and Bakare inside the courtroom

Sowore refused to leave the court room as his lawyer and that of the DSS held a meeting. However, after several minutes of tension, Falana drove the Sowore and Bakare in his car out of the court premises with DSS operatives in several vehicles giving them a hot chase behind.

Police arrest 10 as land grabbers sack Ogun village

Police in Ogun State have arrested 10 suspected members of a land-grabbing syndicate on Wednesday.  The syndicate was alleged to have unleashed terror on innocent residents of Ewujomo village by way of Igbosoro in Ogijo area of the state.

The suspects were arrested following a distress call to the police that the armed hoodlums had invaded the village, causing the villagers to run flee.

Police spokesperson, Abimbola Oyeyemi said when policemen arrived at the scene, the hoodlums began shooting sporadically.  Oyeyemi said the hoodlums were overpowered by the police, who arrested ten members of the syndicate, although some of them escaped with various degrees of injuries.

The police spokesperson said some ammunition and three motor-cycles were seized from the syndicate.
