Coronavirus: FG Orders Closure Of Schools Nationwide

Sex-for-grades. That is a subject that has taken up a great deal of talk time in the country lately. And the Federal Government has contributed its widow’s mite to the debate. It has told female students, “Stop going to lecturers unnecessarily.”

The Federal Government says it is embarrassed by increased allegations of sexual misconduct in the country’s tertiary institutions.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu gave the advice to female students during the formal presentation of Sexual Harassment Policy Document by the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) on Tuesday at the National Assembly in Abuja.

This document’s release follows the recent BBC Sex-For-Grades television expose on Nigerian Universities.

The Minister urged students to take their studies seriously to avoid undue exposure to sexual predators.

University of Port Harcourt Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale said the institution frowns at sexual misconduct and was taking steps to tackle the menace.

WASSCE:  All COVID-19 Positive Students Test Negative

Minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba says the students who first tested positive for COVID-19 during the ongoing 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination have now tested negative and have been discharged. Nwajiuba said the students have returned to classes after receiving treatment.  He said all of them have now tested negative for the new Coronavirus.

He said Gombe State had four of the students.  Kwara had one.  Nwajiuba said all the ones in Bayelsa have also tested negative and have been discharged.

Malawi Government Shut Schools Ahead Of Poll Ruling

Malawi Electoral Commission Announces Vote Rerun On July 2

Some boarding schools and businesses in Malawi have shut their doors as court verdict on the country`s disputed election is expected next week.

A number of schools have sent students home ahead of the ruling for fears of potential violence and disruption that could follow.

Leading bus companies have also issued notices saying that there will be no services on the day of the judgement because there may be violence in the aftermath of the ruling.

Opposition parties sued the incumbent president Peter Mutharika who narrowly won the presidential election. They are challenging his re-election in the poll held in May last year.

Mutharika`s victory unleashed nationwide demonstrations demanding the sacking of the electoral commission chief and lawsuits.

The constitutional court said in a notice, the ruling will be delivered on Monday in the capital Lilongwe.

Malawi information minister has called for calm, saying the government has put in place measures to ensure all citizens are safe.

Covid-19:  Sanwo-Olu Issues New Warning To Residents On Vigilante Operations

The Lagos State government says it has had to change the closing and resumption dates for public primary schools so it could implement an extensive retraining of teachers and prepare them for the new 2020 term.

In a statement, information and strategy commissioner, Gbenga Omotoso said the new dates would not affect closing and resumption dates for private schools and government public secondary schools.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has promised to invest heavily in capacity training for public servants. Especially teachers, to make them realize the government’s vision for a technologically-driven education system.
