Falconets Soar To Quarter-Finals Of Women World Cup

The Under 20 women’s team of Nigeria has progressed to the quarter finals of the 2018 U-20 Women’s World Cup taking place in France. They played a one all draw with China.

Having lost their first game and won the second, this match was going to be a decider for who progresses alongside Germany who had already qualified after their second game.

The Chinese women’s team scored first before Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade scored a dine minute equaliser.

With this draw, Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals from Group D, alongside Germany.

Wimbledon Cancelled Due To Coronavirus

Wimbledon has on Wednesday been cancelled for the first time since World War Two because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The tournament is one of the centrepieces of the British summer sporting calendar and was due to be played between 29 June and 12 July.

As the coronavirus pandemic struck another blue-riband sports event off the calendar and wiped out the entire tennis grasscourt season until at least 13 July.

The decision was reached after an emergency talks between the various stakeholders over the last few days.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) announced that it was impossible for the grasscourt Grand Slam, scheduled for June 29-July 12, to take place.

In a statement by AELTC which reads “it is with great regret that the main board of the All England Club and the committee of management of the championships have today decided that The Championships 2020 will be canceled due to public health concerns linked to the coronavirus epidemic.”

It added “the 134th Championships will instead be staged from June 28 to July 11, 2021.”

Wimbledon is the latest major summer sporting event to be called off, with Euro 2020 and the Tokyo Olympics postponed for 12 months.

English premier league side Arsenal have joined the race for Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen.

Arsenal have joined other premier league clubs Tottenham, Liverpool and Manchester United, who are also reportedly interested in signing the 21-year-old.

Arsenal are looking at using him to replace captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang whose contract expires next year.

If he joins arsenal, Osimhen will be the third Super Eagles player after Nwankwo Kanu and Alex Iwobi to play for the club.

Osimhen has 18 goals in 38 appearances for French side, Lille this season.

To avoid losing Aubameyang on a free transfer, Arsenal might be forced to sell him as he has courted interest from Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.

Arsenal are also interested in Colombian midfielder, James Rodriguez from Real Madrid but could face competition from Premier League rivals Everton and Wolves.

2020 AFF Championship Remains In November, ACC Moved To 2021

The most important sporting event in southeast Asian football will go on as scheduled. ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) have reiterated that the 2020 AFF Championship or Suzuki Cup as it is called, will still be played in November as originally planned.

That means there won’t be any extension to the domestic season, and any postponed fixtures in the three-month period will have to be completed before that.

Meanwhile, the ASEAN Club Championship (ACC) which was originally scheduled for next month has been postponed.
