P&ID: UK Court Grants Nigeria Permission To Challenge $9.6bn Fine

Nigeria has gained victory in a suit to overturn a ten-billion-dollar judgement against it in a case involving Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID).

In the judgment delivered on Thursday, the Business and Property Courts of England and Wales granted Nigeria’s application for an extension of time and relief from sanctions.

This means the case will either go back to arbitration based on the new evidence, or both parties will now settle out of court.

Cranston ruled that it has been necessary to consider a considerable amount of the material to decide, first, whether, as Nigeria contended, there is a prima facie case of fraud, and how strong is that case. Secondly, the steps Nigeria took to investigate the alleged fraud from late 2015.

Three years ago, a tribunal had ordered Nigeria to pay P&ID six and a half billion dollars as damages, as well as pre- and post-judgment interest at 7 percent, bringing the total judgment amounts to ten billion dollars.

The federal government approached the court to establish that the contract was awarded on illegal terms and that P&ID officials paid bribes to get the contract.

30 Injured, 23 Buildings, 15 Vehicles Destroyed In Lagos Tanker-Gas Explosion - Officials

Thirty persons are confirmed injured in a Lagos gas explosion that occurred on Thursday in Iju-Ishaga and Iju-Ajuwon communities in Ifako-Ijaiye council area of Lagos State.

National Emergency Management Agency southwest coordinator, Ibrahim Farinloye says the tanker was trying to enter a gas plant when it exploded.

NEMA says 23 buildings and 15 vehicles were burnt.

No deaths were reported.

Residents of the area have appealed to the state government to relocate gas plants away from residential areas.

Ekiti APC Crisis Worsens As Faction 'Suspends' Fayemi From Party

The crisis in Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has worsened as the party suspends the state governor Kayode Fayemi for what it called anti-party activities.

A party statement accused Fayemi of playing a contrary role to the provisions of the party in the recently concluded Edo governorship election.

APC executives claim that five days before the Edo election, Gov Fayemi hosted PDP big wig Femi Fani- Kayode in the government house in Ado Ekiti and planned a coup against Edo APC.

The party also said governor Fayemi played a role in the gubernatorial election in Oyo state and supported the PDP candidate to defeat that of APC.

Bauchi Govt Update On Devastating Effects Of Flood, As NEMA Warns State, Others

Bauchi State governor, senator Bala Abdulkhadir Mohammed, says the recent flooding in the state had claimed at least 25 lives while seventeen others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The governor gave the update when a delegation of the National Emergency Management team, NEMA, visited him at the government house in Bauchi.  The delegation was led by NEMA’s director-general, retired air vice marshal Muhammad A. Muhammad.

The governor said as many as thirty-five hundred houses and more than two thousand farmlands worth nearly one billion naira were destroyed by flooding.

The governor was represented by his deputy, senator Baba Tella who said 16 of the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State experienced flood this year.  He said the flooding was caused by unusual rainfall experienced so far.

The governor has called on the federal government to do more to mitigate the effects of flood.
