Al-Qaeda, Boko Haram Recruiting Nigerians In North - President Akufo-Addo

Ghanaian president, Nana Akufo-Addo says al Qaeda and Boko Haram terrorists are taking advantage of poverty in north-east Nigeria to recruit new members.  Akufo-addo made the comment while on a working visit to the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, commission in Abuja on Monday.

The Ghanaian president said insurgents were also infiltrating the lake chad basin, Mali and the greater Sahel.

Akufo-Addo has called for a strong regional approach to contain the growing threats of terrorist and extremist activities.  He is calling on the regional bloc to implement the one billion dollar plan of action put in place in Abuja in December to finance activities aimed at eradicating terrorism in ECOWAS.

IG Begins Commands' Tour; Force Admits Cops' Morale Low

In a bid to boost the morale of officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force, Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu is embarking on a tour of police commands across the country today, Friday.

The killings of some twenty-eight policemen by hoodlums who hijacked the EndSARS protests earlier this month is said to have dampened morale within the force.

The inspector-general of police is expected to assess the extent to which the hoodlums negatively affected the force after burning down police stations and looting government and private property.

The effect of the low morale could be felt on the roads in recent days as many police posts are abandoned and traffic stops scrapped.

FG Begins Nationwide Distribution Of 1m Free Meters In Kano, Kaduna, Lagos

Clashes Between Ethiopian States Kill 27 Amid Border Dispute

The federal government says it will begin distributing free meters nationwide.  It is targeting 30 million consumers.

The program, national mass metering program begins today, Friday, and will kick off in Kano, Kaduna and Lagos.

The presidency says the free meter distribution plan is expected to end the issues associated with estimated electricity billings. The distribution exercise would be monitored by state government representatives, the senate committee and house chair on power, representatives of organized labor and civil society organizations.

The program is expected to roll out six million meters for all connection points on grids without meters in the next two years.

The mass metering program will source for all its meters locally and will create thousands of manufacturing jobs.

NCDC Records 150 New COVID-19 Cases

The Nigeria Center for Disease Control, NCDC, has reported one hundred fifty new cases of the novel coronavirus disease, one hundred fifty-four new recoveries, and two deaths in the country.

Lagos state posted 89 new cases, followed by rivers with 19 and Ogun reporting 11.  Bayelsa, Kaduna, Plateau, Taraba, Osun and delta states reported cases in single digits.

So far, sixty-two thousand five hundred twenty-one covid-19 cases have been recorded, and fifty-eight thousand two hundred forty-nine patients have recovered.

Number of fatalities stands at eleven hundred forty-one.
