Lionel Messi Tells Barcelona He Wants To Leave The Club

Barcelona have on Tuesday confirmed to the media that captain Lionel Messi has expressed his desire to leave the club after nearly two decades,

The club confirmed Messi had sent a document via a fax from his lawyers to the club to activate a release clause that would end his contract which is due to expire in 2021. But under the terms of his contract the only way the Argentine player can leave without the club’s consent is if a rival side pays his release clause of 700 million euros ($828m).

Meanwhile, the Camp Nou said it told Messi it wants him to stay and finish his career at the club. It hinted that a legal battle could be coming and said it will not automatically grant the Argentine great his wishes.

Messi, who has been named world player of the year a record six times, has grown increasingly unhappy in the last 12 months with how the club is being run under president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

Earlier, the new club manager, Ronald Koeman told Barcelona’ forward Luis Suarez has been told he has no future with the team.

Koeman confirmed Suarez will be part of the team’s clear out after a trophy-less season doubled by the 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Frank de Boer has been given a two-year contract as Netherlands head coach to replace Ronald Koeman.

Frank de Boer won 112 caps and played at two world cups for the Netherlands.

Barcelona Agree To Sell Striker Luis Suárez To Atlético Madrid

Barcelona have agreed to let striker Luis Suarez join La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

The Uruguayan agreed terms on a reduced salary with atletico after a move to Juventus fell through because of passport issues.

Reports say Barcelona chairman Josep Maria Bartomeu blocked the deal because he did not wish to sell to a Spanish rival.

But, after meeting with Suarez’s representatives, the Catalan club backed down, with the striker threatening to air his grievances to the media.
