COVID-19: Tax Keeps Nigeria Afloat, Not Oil Money -- FIRS Tells Nigerians

The Federal Inland Revenue Service is urging Nigerians to pay their taxes.

FIRS executive chairman, Muhammad Nami, says Nigeria’s economy is being sustained by taxes, not by oil revenues, even in light of the covid-19 outbreak.

Nami says tax revenues have played a great role in financing part of allocations shared by states.  The FIRS boss made these comments during a television public enlightenment appearance to educate citizens on voluntary tax compliance, including stamp duty payments which he says have increased from eighteen billion naira to a current level of around eighty billion naira.

He implored outlets that collect the taxes to remit them to the government so the impact of oil revenue bust would be minimized.

Ekiti APC Crisis Worsens As Faction 'Suspends' Fayemi From Party

The crisis in Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress has worsened as the party suspends the state governor Kayode Fayemi for what it called anti-party activities.

A party statement accused Fayemi of playing a contrary role to the provisions of the party in the recently concluded Edo governorship election.

APC executives claim that five days before the Edo election, Gov Fayemi hosted PDP big wig Femi Fani- Kayode in the government house in Ado Ekiti and planned a coup against Edo APC.

The party also said governor Fayemi played a role in the gubernatorial election in Oyo state and supported the PDP candidate to defeat that of APC.

Bauchi Govt Update On Devastating Effects Of Flood, As NEMA Warns State, Others

Bauchi State governor, senator Bala Abdulkhadir Mohammed, says the recent flooding in the state had claimed at least 25 lives while seventeen others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The governor gave the update when a delegation of the National Emergency Management team, NEMA, visited him at the government house in Bauchi.  The delegation was led by NEMA’s director-general, retired air vice marshal Muhammad A. Muhammad.

The governor said as many as thirty-five hundred houses and more than two thousand farmlands worth nearly one billion naira were destroyed by flooding.

The governor was represented by his deputy, senator Baba Tella who said 16 of the 20 local government areas of Bauchi State experienced flood this year.  He said the flooding was caused by unusual rainfall experienced so far.

The governor has called on the federal government to do more to mitigate the effects of flood.

Zamfara Killings: Arewa Groups Petition President Buhari

The killings in Zamfara and other parts of the north has become of great concern to the coalition of northern groups which has now called on president Muhammadu Buhari to move proactively to stop the bloodshed in the region.

The group’s spokesman, Suleiman Abdul-Azeez presented a petition to the speaker of the state house of assembly, Nasiru Magarya in which it expressed dismay at what he called “the ugly scenario” in the state.

The group wants president Buhari to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those supporting or collaborating with bandits in the state.  The group said those people pose the greatest threat to peace and tranquility in the country.
