Global Covid-19 Cases Cross 12 Million As US Reaches Grim Milestone Of 3 Million Infections

The U.S. coronavirus outbreak has crossed a grim milestone of more than three million confirmed cases on Tuesday. More states have reported high numbers of cases while Florida faces shortage of hospital beds at its intensive care units.

Authorities say at least 24 states, including California, Hawaii, Idaho, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma and Texas have reported disturbingly high infection rates as a percentage of diagnostic tests conducted over the past two weeks.

In Texas alone, the number of hospitalized patients more than doubled in just two weeks.

The U.S. department of health and human services says there would be an additional short-term “surge” testing sites in three metropolitan areas in Florida, Louisiana and Texas.

More than four dozen hospitals across 25 of 67 Florida counties have reported their intensive care units are full.

A widely cited mortality model from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) projected on Tuesday U.S. deaths would reach two hundred eight thousand by November.

In Arizona, another hot spot, the rate of coronavirus tests coming back positive rose more than a quarter as of last weekend.

The surge has forced authorities to rethink reopening businesses.

Texas state fair, which had been scheduled to open in late September, has been canceled for the first time since world war two.

One hundred, thirty-one thousand Americans have died as a result of the pandemic.

According to Johns Hopkins University, more than 12 million persons around the world have been diagnosed with coronavirus and more than 550,000 have died. Nearly 6.7 million have recovered from the virus.

Coronavirus crisis could set back Latin America and the Caribbean by a decade as countries endure faltering economies and rising poverty, according to the United Nations economic commission for the region and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Thousands of Chileans are withdrawing 10 percent of their pension funds because of the economic toll the coronavirus is having on their finances.

Many have been forced to stand in long queues to get the money because they do not have access to a computer or do not know how to use one.

Local municipalities have supplied buses to use as offices in order to help process as many requests as possible.

Brazil President Bolsonaro’s Wife, Minister Test Positive For Covid-19

Just days after Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro said he had overcome the Coronavirus with a negative test following weeks in quarantine, officials have on Thursday said Bolsonaro’s wife and one of his ministers have tested positive for COVID-19.

On July 7, the President who told reporters he had been diagnosed with the coronavirus, participated in his first public event on Wednesday, to recognize rural women workers, along with his wife. They were joined by Agriculture Minister Tereza Cristina and the minister of women, family and human rights, Damares Alves.

Brazil’s first lady and a fifth member of President Jair Bolsonaro’s Cabinet have tested positive for the new coronavirus, officials said Thursday.

According to the statement the president’s wife appeared to be in good health, but would follow established protocols.

Earlier, Brazil’s Science and Technology Minister Marcos Pontes wrote on Twitter that he tested positive after experiencing flu-like symptoms and headache. The 57-year-old is now in isolation. The presidency’s press office said in a statement later that Michelle Bolsonaro, 38, also tested positive.

Last week, Citizenship Minister Onyx Lorenzoni and Education Minister Milton Ribeiro announced they tested positive. In March, two other Cabinet members were infected.

In Brazil, the health ministry reported 69,074 new confirmed cases and 1,595 additional deaths pushing the country past 2.5 million infections and 90,000 fatalities.

Ukraine Sees Record Daily High Of 1,197 New Coronavirus Cases

Ukraine’s council of security and defence on Thursday reported 1,197 new coronavirus cases a record daily high.

The total number of cases rose to 68,794, including 1,673 deaths and 38,154 recovered as of July 30.

Following the gradual lifting of restrictions that began in late-May the number of new daily infections has increased sharply in the past two months.
