Ten South Sudan Ministers Test Positive For Covid-19

South Sudan’s vice-president, Riek Machar, has tested positive for coronavirus. His office said on Monday, his wife Angelina Teny, who serves as defense minister, some of his office staff and bodyguards have also tested positive for the virus.

Machar said on state television that he would be in self-isolation for 14 days in his residence. He said he had no symptoms before testing positive.

South Sudan has, so far, recorded 347 cases of coronavirus and six deaths.

Last week, authorities reported two covid-19 cases in a camp outside the capital Juba, raising concerns among humanitarians that the infection could devastate the crowded settlement.

South Africa Scientists Say Up To 50,000 Covid-19 Deaths Possible

South Africa scientists have said up to 50,000 persons could die of coronavirus in the nation in the next six months.

South Africa already has the highest number of infections and deaths on the African continent, with more than 19,000 identified cases and 369 deaths.

Scientists hired by the health ministry to model the spread of the coronavirus said the country could see between 35,000 and 50,000 coronavirus deaths by November.

Models showed on Thursday, South Africa could also see as many as 3 million infections by the end of the year as the southern-hemisphere-winter, leads to a higher rate of infection.

Ten South Sudan Ministers Test Positive For Covid-19

Ten ministers in South Sudan have contracted the coronavirus, days after first vice-president of the country Riek Machar, his wife and staff tested positive for the virus.

Information minister Michael Makuei says all the ministers are former members of the high-level task force on coronavirus. They were reported to have come in contact with an official who tested positive of covid-19. The health minister is the only coronavirus-free among the task force.

The government says, all the ministers infected are now in self-isolation and are in good health.

South Sudan has 481 confirmed cases and six deaths.

There are fears that the virus could cause havoc as the healthcare system is barely functioning following decades of conflict.  Displaced persons in hundreds of thousands are living in camps.

Cholera Outbreak Kills 13 In Kenya

At least 13 persons have died of cholera in Kenya since the onset of rains and deadly floods in the country.

The health ministry says more than 500 cases of cholera have been reported mostly affecting children and fatalities have been recorded in the northern part of the country. The outbreak started in Garissa and has spread to four other counties.

Kenya minister of health Mutahi Kagwe attributed the outbreak to flooding that led to poor sanitation.
