NCDC Announces 276 COVID-19 Cases As Total Hits 8,344

The constantly increasing number of coronavirus cases in Nigeria has become a worrying point for many.  No day goes by where the nation reports lowering numbers.  The figures that were in single digits in March have now entered the eight-thousand range.

The Nigeria Center for disease Control reported two hundred and seventy-six, confirmed cases and sixteen deaths on Tuesday. To date 8,344 cases have been confirmed. More than twenty-three hundred patients have been discharged, and two hundred forty-nine deaths have occurred in 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Of the new figures, Lagos topped the list with 161 cases.  Rivers and Edo were distant second and third with thirty-six and twenty-seven respectively.  Kaduna had nineteen while Nasarawa recorded ten.  Ten other states shared the rest of the figures in single digits.

Labour Unions In Niger Reject Salary Cut, To Go Spiritual

Organized civil servants in Niger State have again rejected a state government plan to slash their salaries.

Organized labor unions have opted for a special prayer session to ask for divine intervention in the matter.

The state government informed workers and state labor unions a week ago of plans to reduce their salaries by thirty percent.  Those of local government employees were cut by 40 per cent because of a shortfall in revenue receipts from the federation account.

Labour leaders have threatened to go on strike if the state government goes ahead with the plans.

Chairman of the state’s Trade Union Congress, comrade Yakubu Garba, says civil servants in Niger State were not part of the beneficiaries of state’s covid-19 palliatives; so, their salaries should not be slashed.

Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo has asked the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to investigate an allegation by the suspended EFCC acting chairman, Ibrahim Magu, that he collected N4 billion from him.

In a petition to the I.G., the vice-president has accused Jackson Ude, former director of communication to ex-president Goodluck Jonathan, of publishing false claims against his office and personality.

Osinbajo’s lawyer says if the allegation is proved to be false after investigation, the inspector-general of police should initiate criminal proceedings against Ude.

Vice president Osinbajo has denied the allegation and described it as “baseless.”

Buhari signs revised N10.8trn 2020 budget into law today

President Buhari has signed into law, the revised 2020 national budget of nearly eleven trillion naira.

The president says the budget had to be revised because of the effect of coronavirus on the nation’s economy.

He said ministries, department and agencies will be given 15 per cent of their capital allocation by the end of the month.

Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo, secretary to the government of the federation, Boss Mustapha, chief of staff to the president, Ibrahim Gambari, and the leadership of the national assembly witnessed the signing.

President Buhari says the timing of the budget is to keep with the January to December budget cycle.
