Domestic Airlines Suspend Operations Amid Covid-19 Outbreak

Just about all domestic airlines in the country are suspending their commercial flight operations effective Friday.  In fact, Dana Air already suspended operations on Wednesday and Aero Contractors stopped flights today.

Arik Air management said the decision was taken to curb the spread of covid-19.  The airline said those who have purchased flight tickets can still use them once the airline resumes operations which it says would be done when feasible.

Air Peace says it is suspending service for 23 days in the best interest of the country, its passengers and workforce.  It also cites curbing the spread of coronavirus as the reason for its decision.

Aero Contractors, too, said covid-19 is the reason for its decision to suspend operations.  The airline says its action would support government initiatives and precautions to ensure there is no community infection in the country.

Kogi Records First Ever Cases Of Coronavirus As NCDC Confirms 389 New Patients

NCDC has announced nearly four hundred new coronavirus cases across the country on Wednesday.  The center says twenty-two states garnered three hundred eighty-nine new patients and recorded five new deaths.

Lagos leads, once again, as it records its highest one day figure of two hundred fifty-six.  Katsina was a very distant second with 23 cases.

With this new number, Nigeria is rapidly racking up the figures which now stand at eight thousand, seven hundred thirty-three.  Twenty-five hundred patients have been discharged while two hundred fifty-four deaths have occurred.

The Nigerian Center for disease Control also says Kogi State has recorded its first ever covid-19 cases as it announced two infections.  Kogi has disagreed with the NCDC announcement.  The state says all its tests have turned out negative.

Lagos Demands N400bn From Nigerian Govt For Erosion Projects

The Lagos State government says it would need four hundred billion naira from the federal government so it can complete its project of saving the nation’s coastline from erosion. The News Agency of Nigeria reports this appeal was made on Wednesday by the commissioner for water front infrastructure development, Kabiru Abdullahi, during a press briefing.

The commissioner said Lagos had constructed groins needed to hold at bay violent ocean currents that are eating up the nation’s coastline.

A groin is a rigid hydraulic structure built from an ocean shore or from river banks to interrupt water flow and limit the movement of sediment.

The commissioner said environmental degradation, erosion and flooding had worsened the situation.  He said the remaining part of the project is about sixty kilometers that would cost four hundred billion naira to complete.

He appealed to the federal government not to abandon the project to Lagos State alone.

Nigerian Govt Clashes With W.H.O. Over Use Of Chloroquine

The ministry of health says the World Health Organization does not dictate to countries how they fight the covid-19 pandemic.  Minister of state for health, Olorunnimbe Mamora, says all W.H.O. does is provide guidelines to countries on the fight against the covid-19 pandemic.

W.H.O. Director-General, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus had announced on Monday the organization was suspending solidarity trial with hydroxichloroquine on covid-19 patients because of safety concerns.

A day after that announcement, the Nigerian National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, tabled its own plan to continue with the hydroxychloroquine trials.

Mamora said during the Presidential Task Force on covid-19 briefing on Wednesday, the country would look at realities on ground and apply innovative, flexible and adaptable measures in the fight against the virus.
