INEC Declares PDP’s Diri As Winner Of Bayelsa Election

PDP Congratulates New Bayelsa Gov-Elect Douye Diri

Barely 24 hours after the supreme court sacked Bayelsa State governor-elect David Lyon and his deputy, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremieoyo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has on Friday, declared the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Douye Diri, as the winner of the November 16 governorship election.

The chairman of INEC, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu said the commission would give him the Certificate of Return in compliance with the order of the Supreme Court, which sacked David Lyon 24 hours to his inauguration.

Yakubu said INEC would give him the CoR as soon as he comes for it.

On Thursday, a five man panel of justices led by justice Mary Odili ruled in a unanimous decision that deputy governor-elect, Degi-Eremieoyo, presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The apex court held that since Degi-Eremieoyo shared a joint ticket with the governor-elect, his disqualification invalidated their nomination by the all progressive congress, APC.

The court has ordered INEC to immediately withdraw the certificate of return and issue a fresh one to the Peoples Democratic Party with the second highest number of votes.

Coronavirus: Stop Wasting Testing Kits On Politicians - AIED

Advocacy for Integrity and Economic Development has urged the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control to leave the politicians alone and focus on Nigerians who are more in number and at a greater risk of the deadly covid-19 virus.

The group says NCDC needs to stop, “wasting limited testing kits on political office holders and government officials,” end quote.

A statement by the group’s director of media and publicity, Comrade O’seun John, says the unchecked usage of the scarce testing kits for covid-19 on government officials and politicians is quote “appalling and a disservice to ordinary Nigerians who deserve to be truly tested” end quote.

The group further says the present statistics of fewer than 200 individuals who have received testing from the NCDC is disgraceful for a population of almost 200 million. The group says NCDC must channel its resources to improving the testing rates for Nigerians.

Nigeria Records Five New Covid-19 Cases, Total Confirmed Cases Now 70

Nigeria has on Friday recorded 11 new cases of covid-19.  The National Centre for Disease Control says eight cases were discovered in the Lagos, two in Enugu and 1 in Edo State.

The NCDC recorded its biggest surge of the infections on Thursday with a total number of the 14 in a single day.

With the new confirmed cases, the country’s total confirmed cases now stand at 81, three have been discharged with 1 death reported so far.

Lagos State still has the highest number of cases in the country with 52.   FCT has 14 cases, Ogun and Oyo have three cases each, Bauchi, Enugu and Edo have two each  and one each in Ekiti, Osun and Rivers.

Buhari Advises Nigerians To Stay Away From Public, Religious Gatherings

President Muhammadu Buhari has advised Nigerians to stay away from large public gatherings, including religious events.

In a statement, the president also asked Nigerians to adhere to all instructions issued by the ministry of health, especially on social distancing.

President Buhari further says this is important because the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) spreads faster through crowding.

Meanwhile, the presidency says Buhari is in good shape and fully in charge of the country.

Special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina says it is important to re-emphasize that the president had tested negative to the dreaded covid-19 virus.

Minister of information, Lai Mohammed, also says, in a separate speech, the president is not coughing. He speculation that Buhari may have contracted the deadly coronavirus is fake news.

The minister says the president will address the nation at the appropriate time.
