Barcelona Fires Coach Valverde, Hires Setien

The Spanish champions may be top of La Liga, but it was their results in the Champions League that ultimately cost coach Ernesto Valverde his job. The club has appointed Quique Setien as his replacement.

Barcelona has on Monday fired coach Ernesto Valverde midway through the season, replacing him with former Real Betis head coach Quique Setien, days after been eliminated from the Spanish Super Cup semifinals.

Setien is under contract with Barcelona until the end of the 2021-22 season.

55-year-old Valverde won two La Liga titles and a Copa del Rey.

Spanish champions said in a statement late Monday. “Setien is one of the most experienced coaches in Spanish football. Throughout his career he has been a proponent of possession based, attacking football that has been attractive to the fans.”

Under Valverde, Barcelona has not been able to show consistency in the Champions League due to defense woes, and those problems were again evident on Thursday when the team conceded two late goals to lose to Atletico Madrid, 3-2 in Saudi Arabia.

The International Federation of Football History and Statistics has ranked the Nigeria Professional Football League as the 57th strongest national league in the world and seventh in Africa

The Tunisian Ligue 1 is ranked in number one position in Africa, followed by Morocco, Egypt, Angola, South Africa, Zambia, Nigeria and Algeria.

The English Premier League is ranked as the strongest league in the world, with Brazil, La Liga, Serie A and Colombia’s Primera A in the top five.

Kobe Bryant: Tributes Paid To LA Lakers Star Who Died In Helicopter Crash

Basketball legend Kobe Bryant and one of his daughters Gianna Maria Bryant were among nine persons killed on Sunday morning when the helicopter in which they were traveling crashed into a hillside in Calabasas, California.

Bryant and his daughter were on their way to the a sports academy for a basketball game scheduled for Sunday.

Gianna was expected to play in the game and Bryant was expected to coach

Los Angeles county sheriff’s department says the were killed.

Sikorsky, the helicopter manufacturer, tweeted its condolences. “We extend our sincerest condolences to all those affected by today’s Sikorsky S-76B accident in Calabasas, California,” the company said.

Bryant is survived by his wife, Vanessa, and three daughters. His oldest daughter turned 17 a week ago; his youngest daughter is 7 months old.

Bryant’s death comes a day after Lebron James passed him as No. 3 on the NBA all-time scoring list when he reached 33,643 points.

NBA Legend Kobe Bryant Dead in Helicopter Crash

Former NBA superstar and US basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna were among nine persons killed in a helicopter crash on Sunday in the city of Calabasas about 30 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna died along with seven others. The group was believed to be heading to the Mamba Academy he founded in Thousand Oaks, for a youth tournament involving his daughter and her teammates Alyssa Altobelli and Payton Chester.

Alyssa and Payton were also killed in the crash alongside Alyssa’s parents John and Keri Altobelli, Payton’s mother Sarah Chester, girls’ basketball coach Christina Mauser and pilot Ara Zobayan.

The 41-year-old, an 18-time NBA All-Star rocketed to fame as an 18-year-old and played for the Los Angeles Lakers for 20 years and winning five NBA championships.

On Sunday night, Bryant was also remembered at the Grammy Awards, which were held at the Staples Center, the Los Angeles Lakers’ stadium.

Host, Alicia Keys said “we’re all feeling crazy sadness right now… Because earlier today Los Angeles, America and the whole wide world lost a hero. We’re literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built.”

The National Basketball Association issued a statement saying it was “devastated by the tragic passing of Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna”.

“For 20 seasons, Kobe showed us what is possible when remarkable talent blends with an absolute devotion to winning,” it said.

Bryant famously scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in 2006, the second-highest single-game total in NBA history.

He also won an Oscar for best short animated film in 2018 for Dear Basketball, a five-minute film based on a love letter to the sport he had written in 2015.

Bryant and his wife, Vanessa, have three other daughters, Natalia, Bianca and Capri.

Flight data shows the aircraft appeared to get into trouble above the LA Zoo, where it circled for 15 minutes at a very low altitude in the run-up to the crash at around 10am.

In air traffic control audio which was recorded shortly before the crash, the pilot of the Sikorsky is told by a controller that ‘you’re still too low level’ to be tracked by radar.

The US Federal Aviation Administration identified the crashed helicopter as a Sikorsky S-76, saying in a statement the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board would investigate.
