Indian Police Shoot Dead Four Men Suspected Of Hyderabad Rape

Indian police on Friday said they have shot dead four men suspected of raping and killing a vet in the southern city of Hyderabad last week.

In an incident that caused a nationwide outrage last week the men were arrested in connection with the gang rape and murder.

A police officer told AFP the four men Mohammad Areef, Jollu Shiva, Jollu Naveen, and Chintakunta Chennakeshavulu were killed while trying to escape as they were taken to the crime scene in the early hours of Friday for a re-enactment of the crime.

Prakash Reddy, a deputy commissioner of police in Hyderabad said “they were killed in crossfire. They tried to snatch weapons from the guards but were shot dead,”

“We called an ambulance but they died before any medical help could reach them,” Reddy added two policemen were injured in the scuffle.

However, the lack of clarity around the incident is indicative of an extrajudicial police killing something allegedly common in India.

On Thursday, the charred body of the 27-year-old woman who went missing on Wednesday night was found wrapped in a blanket and doused with kerosene in the town of Shadnagar, about 50km (31 miles) from Hyderabad.

The four were arrested last week on charges of raping, murdering and burning the body of the veterinary doctor, who had parked her scooter on a busy highway on Nov 27.

The men deflated her scooter tyre and lured her to a truck yard with the promise of fixing the machine, according to police.

They allegedly then raped and murdered the woman before setting the body on fire under an isolated bridge.

On Saturday, hundreds of protesters gathered outside a police station on the outskirts of Hyderabad, where the suspects were kept, demanding the four be handed over to them.

Malaysia's Mahathir Quits But Asked To Stay As Interim PM

Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has on Monday unexpectedly announced his resignation but was asked to stay on as interim leader by the country’s monarch until a successor is appointed.

The resignation of the 94-year-old came after months of rising tensions in the “Pact of Hope” coalition, which stormed to a shock victory in 2018 against a corruption-plagued government that had ruled Malaysia for six decades.

According to Reuters news agency, Mahathir also reportedly resigned from his own party, Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia.

Mahathir’s party also announced that it was quitting the ruling government coalition, Pakatan Harapan (Alliance of Hope), casting doubt on the future of the partnership.

At the 2018 polls Mahathir and his old rival Ibrahim Anwar put their differences aside and joined forces to take on a corruption-plagued government.

Mahathir, who previously served as premier from 1981 to 2003, had made a pre-election pledge to hand power to Anwar but has repeatedly refused to fix a date.

On Monday, Chief Secretary Mohd Zuki Ali said in a statement the king accepted Mahathir’s resignation after meeting with Mahathir.
