We Are Still At Work, No Sack Letters – Osinbajo Aides

Some aides of vice-president Yemi Osinbajo allegedly sacked have debunked rumours circulating round the country. They claim they still have their jobs.

Daily trust online published on Thursday a list of twenty seven special assistance to the vice president affected by the sacking.

The special assistant to the VP on innovation, Ifeoluwa Adedayo said he had not received any letter, as he resumed for work at the presidential villa.

Aisha Buhari, El-Rufai Acknowledges Yahaya Bello’s ‘Sins’ In Kogi

Governorship elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states are scheduled for tomorrow.  Both president Muhammadu Buhari and former president Goodluck Jonathan have decried the growing violence in both states.

They have cautioned politicians to drop bitterness from their politics.  Signals from the two states, and violence already recorded in some of parts of the two states are described by Buhari as saddening, and by Jonathan as disturbing.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s first lady, Aisha Buhari, and Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai have both appealed to voters in Kogi State to forgive governor Yahaya Bello for his wrongdoings.

Aisha Buhari assured Kogi citizens their salaries will be paid in the state as her husband, president Buhari, wades into the matter.  Aisha buhari assured Kogi voters they would not be disappointed if bello is reelected.

And governor El-Rufai was actually down on his knees at the All Progressives Congress (APC) mega rally in Lokoja, Kogi State capital, where he begged kogi voters to forgive the governor for his misdeeds during his four years in office.  El-Rufai chairs the APC gubernatorial campaign in the state.

El-Rufai says Yahaya Bello is young and may have offended and fought against many in Kogi State.  He said the governor is young and was expected to make mistakes.

Nigeria, Benin, Niger Raise Joint Team On Border Reopening

A joint border patrol team that includes the police, customs and immigration has been set up by Nigeria, Benin Republic and Niger to recommend a date for the reopening of borders.

The three countries reached a resolution on Thursday in Abuja at the end of a tripartite anti-smuggling committee meeting..

Foreign affairs minister, Geoffrey Onyeama said the tripartite committee will comprise of ministers of finance, trade, foreign affairs, customs, immigration and national security adviser.  He said the committee has a mandate to ensure actions that would monitor, control and suppress smuggled goods and other related matters.

Onyeama said one of the points to which the governments agreed is to ensure persons from the three countries can enter and exit each other’s states with valid ECOWAS recognized travel documents through recognized controlled posts.  The meeting also discussed issues of free movement of persons who do not have valid ECOWAS travel documents, and the many illegal warehouses along the border corridors

Hate Speech: Buhari Govt Has No Plan To 'Muzzle Media' - Lai Mohammed

The federal government says the hate speech bill was not aimed at “muzzling the media.” Minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed says the hate speech bill won’t stop Nigerians from criticizing the administration of president Muhammadu Buhari.

The minister was addressing the Guild Of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, in Abuja, on Thursday.  Mohammed said the bill was targeting those who spread fake news, and purveyors of hate in the country.

The minister said, as part of democracy, Nigerians can criticize the Buhari administration.  But he warned that peddling hate speech would not be tolerated.  Lai Mohammed said there should be plurality of opinions in a democracy.  He said the government’s concern is the abuse of social media by those who have chosen to spread fake news and hate speech.  He said if that is allowed, there would be inherent danger for the country’s peace and unity.

The minister said Nigeria is not alone in fighting fake news and hate speech.  He pointed to countries like Germany, the UK, Singapore, China, South Korea, Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, and many others, whom he said are also doing something about social media.
