Rafael Nadal Wins 17th Grand Slam

King of the clay, Rafael Nadal was at his best as he defeated Austrian, Dominic Thiem to emerge winner of the French Open at Roland Garros.

His energetic display showed that he had totally overcome his injury worries.

Thiem who has been causing upsets struggled to play at Nadal’s pace and power.

It ended in a 6-4 6-3 6-2 loss for him against the world number 1.

The French Open victory was Nadal’s 11th, the second highest of any tennis player in a single tournament, coming behind Margaret Court’s 14 Australian Open titles.

It was his 17th Grand Slam, three behind record holder and arguably the greatest tennis player of all time, Roger Federer who has 20 in the bag.

Nadal tried to equal Swede, Bjorn Borg’s record by winning 41 sets consecutively but fell short in his Semi Final game against Argentine, Juan Martin Del Potro. He has 37 sets and has built a formidable career that doesn’t look like ending anytime soon, despite being 32.

CAF Set To Move AFCON To 2022

There is a possibility of the African Cup of Nations holding in 2022 instead of next year. French radio Monte Carlo reports this is as a result of the ravaging coronavirus pandemic.

The French radio says a source from within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) attributes the possible postponement to difficulty of organizing the tournament.

The next AFCON is scheduled for January the 9th.

Real Madrid Remains Most Valuable Football Club In Europe

The Football Clubs’ Valuation has on Thursday revealed that the Spanish football giants Real Madrid remains the most valuable club in Europe.

The fifth annual report ranks clubs based on their “enterprise value”, a metric created by analyzing profitability, popularity, sporting potential, TV rights and stadium ownership to January 1, 2020.

In the report by accountancy firm KPMG published, Manchester United is second despite its on-pitch struggles in the Premier League while Barcelona and Bayern Munich got the third and fourth position respectively.

According to Al jazeera report, Andrea Sartori, global head of sport at KPMG said “club values have certainly been affected” by the coronavirus pandemic “but the immediate impact cannot yet be quantified.”

Many sporting events around the world have been postponed and canceled due to the outbreak which has so far infected more than 5.7 million persons and killed more than 350,000.

Coronavirus: UK Government Gives Green Light To 'Close-Contact' Sport Training

The UK government has released a second phase of guidelines for athletes, elite sportsmen and women for organized and close-contact training to take place under carefully controlled medical conditions.

Public health officials and sports medical officers have contributed to the drafting of the guidelines.
